The Edwin James Society has approached this problem as well, focusing upon the residential unit as the essential human unit relative to the ecosphere. Our thinking is that which is truly economic is also ecologic. The modern banking and finance system has transformed humans into perpetual serfs. 25 to 30 year mortgages, with all the refis along the way, serve as an economic prison preventing the accumulation of wealth and freedom to live as you choose.

The modern system of contracting for home construction and finance is very new compared to the human existence now spanning 200,000 years. For the vast majority of that time, we built our own homes without any contractors and without any financing. Home construction is not rocket science, and after prostitution, is humanity’s oldest profession. We absolutely must demolish the vicious cycle of perpetual debt and servitude created by the modern approach to something a simple and basic as shelter.

Numerous alternative building strategies exist that are incredibly affordable and can be constructed by persons with little to no experience in construction. What’s more- these structures are vastly more energy efficient, with some requiring no heating or air conditioning. The problem, you ask??? Local and state governments tend to put in place regulations that favor the bankers, contractors and regulators. They also put in place tremendous disincentives for alternative building concepts. In my own experience, I went through five years of hell in getting an alternative construction design approved by local authorities. I was threatened, harassed and libeled through the entire process. Numerous others in my community simply gave up and left, selling off their property and moving back to the big city.

Yes, we absolutely need a movement to reverse these debilitating trends. Freeing people of the predatory system of banking, finance, contracting and debt makes people free, plain & simple.
